Overview

A powerful argument for mindfully developing empathy and creating deeper connections with colleagues, friends, and loved ones

Empathy is an essential leadership skill and a cornerstone of good relationships—but it can be hard to access when it's most needed. Luckily, empathy is also a learnable skill, with the power to move conversations out of gridlock and pain. With mindfulness, empathy has deescalated conflicts, combated loneliness, and built human connections in the most unlikely places. With this book, readers will learn how anger and blame get translated and productive dialogues made possible, how to repair arguments before they cause damage, and how self-empathy transforms relationships. With more than 70 stories collected from Nonviolent Communication trainers and practitioners around the world, readers will encounter new ways to talk to the people in their lives and learn techniques for empathizing with one's self and with others at home, at work, and in the community.

Author Biography

Mary Goyer, MS, is a holistic counselor and trainer who specializes in leadership and personal development at work and at home. In her practice, she draws upon her traditional training in marriage and family therapy, her background in Nonviolent Communication, and her expertise in mind-body healing techniques to help professionals in struggling teams tap into their creative, collaborative potential. Mary spent the first part of her career as an educator, counselor, and consultant working with "at-risk" tweens and teens. After years of supporting students directly, she now focuses on providing professional development for educators. Mary's passion for cultivating community through interpersonal skills trainings is part of her holistic approach, supporting sustainability and resiliency among educators and ultimately helping students grow into contributing, balanced adults. This passion has inspired numerous corporate/school partnership projects that aim to provide schools with social-emotional programming resources for students, teachers, and parents. Meanwhile, Mary continues to bring her warm, interdisciplinary approach to her work with busy professionals. In private practice, she combines her training, coaching, and counseling backgrounds to help leaders cultivate the collaboration skills that make a true impact—at work, at home, and in the larger community.
